Living in Atlanta: What You Should Know Before Moving

Updated: Mar 8, 2022

So, you’re thinking of living in Atlanta, Georgia? Let Pack It Up Moving & Storage be the first to welcome you to this thriving star of the South. But before you start packing up your home, we asked our local movers in Atlanta about things to know before moving to Atlanta.

The Reality of Living in Atlanta

Ranking ninth among the largest metro areas in the country, Atlanta, GA is home to more than 5.6 million people. Between the diverse cultures, the advancing technology sector, and the growing metropolitan area, there is no wonder why so many people think about moving to Atlanta. Here are the top 5 things to know about living in Atlanta before moving.

1. No One Actually Calls Atlanta “Hotlanta”

Take it from our Atlanta movers themselves, Atlanta is certainly hot! While Georgia is certainly known for its heat and humidity, Hotlanta is also meant to convey the fun and excitement offered in the city – except local Atlantans refuse to claim the term as a reference to their city. Instead, most of the people who do refer to “Hotlanta” are often visitors from out of town.

The term can be traced as far back as the 1960s but was more recently popularized by the Atlanta Convention Bureau in the early 2000s as part of a marketing campaign to attract visitors. As the debate continues on social media about whether the term “Hotlanta” should be buried, it is mainly accompanied by locals rolling their eyes. It lacks the proper representation of Atlanta as a diverse and vibrant city. So between you and me, we can just call it Atlanta.

2. Atlanta Food and Drink Scene Is Glorious

Something else to know before moving to Atlanta is that we have the most incredible food and drink scene. Some of the best chefs around the world claim Atlanta, Georgia as their home, serving food from all different parts of the world. Our Druid Hill movers and packers recommend Holeman & Finch if you are looking for the best burger in Atlanta. If you’re in the mood for chicken and waffles, head to the Atlanta Breakfast Club – you will be anything but disappointed.

3. Say Goodbye to Pepsi, Coke Is King of the Soft Drinks

Another important thing you need to learn about Atlanta is that Coca-Cola products reign over Pepsi. With the Coca-Cola headquarters claiming the Atlanta metro, you’ll likely spend time convincing people from other states why they should drink Coke products over Pepsi. Very few restaurants offer the competition, so you might as well realize that Coke is king if you plan on living in Atlanta.

4. We Have a Love/Hate Relationship with Our Sports Teams

Our Buckhead movers claim that one of the most important things to know before you’re living in Atlanta is that we have a love/hate relationship with our sports teams. Every year we feel as though the Falcons, Braves, or Hawks will bring home a trophy, but Atlanta fans are always disappointed. Although that doesn’t mean we don’t go down without a fight, with some of the most impressive stadiums, Atlanta fans fill the stands and gather at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium or Truist Park to cheer for the home teams.

5. Atlanta Has a Rich History

If you are wondering, “should I move to Atlanta?” let the rich history that surrounds the city be your defining factor. An interesting thing to know before moving to Atlanta is that Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta. He lived in the city for the majority of his life and spent time preaching all over the Atlanta metro area. Our Peachtree City movers recommend visiting the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame and the National Center for Civil and Human Rights to learn more about the history that surrounds the city.
