At Pack It Up Moving & Storage we acknowledge how stressful and exhausting moving can be for most people. From packing your house to loading and unloading, not to mention all the important paperwork involved in moving out of one property as well as moving into a new space. So to make it easier, we asked our team of Georgia movers and packers for their advice on how to complete a Georgia change of address and how to get a Georgia license.
Whether you are moving to or from Georgia or simply just down the street, you will need to sort out a few things with the Georgia DMV. One of the first things you should do is change your address on your driver’s license as well as the information on your vehicle registration, if applicable.
Change Your Address When You Move to Georgia from Another State
If you are planning on moving to Georgia from another state, you will be required to get a Georgia driver’s license at the Georgia Department of Drivers Services office. The process of obtaining a driver’s license in Georgia is not available online or over the phone; you have to go in person. Our Druid Hill movers recommend making a DMV appointment since GA DMV offices can get pretty hectic.
You are given 30 days after becoming a Georgia resident to get a new state driver’s license. The state of Georgia considers you a new resident as soon as you rent or buy a home within the state.
Save time; visit the Georgia Department of Driver Services website and fill out some of the information ahead of time. To complete a Georgia change of address, you will need to bring the following documentation to the DMV:
Current out-of-state driver’s license
Proof of identity, such as passport or birth certificate
Proof of social security number, such as a social security card or a W-2 form
Proof of new Georgia residency, including utility bills, pay stubs, and other forms of official correspondence sent to your Georgia address.
Unfortunately, you can’t bring your monthly magazine subscription as a DMV proof of residency.
For all non-U.S. citizens, ensure you bring proof of U.S residency
The Buckhead team of movers and packers note that if your name and proof of identity are not the same as your current driver’s license, you will also have to bring documentation with proof of a name change. This may include a divorce decree, court order, or a marriage license that ensures a legal name change.
Is There a Fee for a Georgia Change of Address?
Yes; the fee for a Georgia non-commercial driver’s license is $32. If you are a combat veteran, you can get a non-commercial Georgia driver’s license free of charge.
Georgia Change of Address for Current Peach State Residents
If you are moving within the state of Georgia, you have 60 days to update your address on your Georgia driver’s license. Our Peachtree City movers note that when updating your Georgia driver’s license there are few options to consider:
Complete a Georgia DMV change of address form online. You will need to know your driver’s license number as well as the last four digits of your social security number to complete the change of address form.
Download the DDS 2 GO Mobile App. Using the app, you can fill out your Georgia change of address information. You will still need your driver’s license number as well as the last four digits of your social security number in the DDS 2 GO mobile app to update your driver’s license.
Visit the Georgia Department of Driver Services office and complete a Georgia DMV change of address form in person. Ensure you bring all the proper documentation with proof of Georgia residency, found above.
Is There a Fee to Change Your Address As a Georgia Resident?
If you are a resident of Georgia and moving within the state, then you are allowed one Georgia change of address on your driver’s license at no cost, assuming that it does not expire within 150 days.
If your GA driver’s license expires within 150 days of the DMV change of address request, however, you will be charged the $32 renewal fee.
Out-of-State Change of Address Process
If you are planning a move from Georgia to another state, you do not need to notify the Georgia DMV. Each state has its own procedures to change your address and obtain a driver’s license; be sure to look them up as you’re preparing to move. Once you receive a driver’s license from your new home state, the Georgia Department of Driver Services will automatically cancel your Georgia driver’s license.
